Vintage Chalkware Jolly Santa Bank #1

One of two c. 1940's well-loved chalkware Santa Banks I purchased in Door County. See separate listing for the other. 

Chalkware figures like this were popular in the 1940s and 1950s and were often sold in dime stores, gift shops, and at carnivals and fairs. Their hand-painted finishes and charming folk-art character have made them enduring holiday collectibles. Santa's rosy cheeks and expression make me think someone left him spiked egg nog!

I chose him for his character rather than perfection. The wear on this Santa is part of the story, a reminder that he has already brightened many a Christmas season. He is very festive with minor imperfections that come with age and decades of lovingly decorating for Christmas. Fantastic on a mantel or on top of kitchen cupboard with greenery or other holiday decor.
